1943. COHEN, Gustave. LA GRANDE CLARTE DU MOYEN-AGE. [THE GREAT CLARITY OF THE MIDDLE AGES]. NY: Editions De La Maison Francaise, [1943]. 12mo., printed wraps; 225 pages. First Edition. Cohen was a Medievalist professor at the Sorbonne until the Vichy Government forced him to resign in 1940, after which he emigrated to the United States. Signed presentation from Cohen on the half-title page, to Carol Crotty & dated August 14, 1943. The inside the front cover & front endpaper are covered with more than a dozen ink signatures. One is American poet Marianne Moore: "Marianne Moore is ever grateful to Miss Carol Crotty" with "Mary Warner Moore" (her mother's name) written in Marianne's hand beneath. Other signatures appear to be American composer Vittorio Rieti, Williams College professor James Bissett Pratt, and American journalist Herbert Solow. The publisher, Editions De La Maison Francaise, a renowned French bookstore in Rockefeller Center, published works by expatriated French authors and scholars escaping from the Nazi Vichy regime.
