The Holy War, made by King Shaddai upon Diabolus, for the Regaining of the Metropolis of the World; or, the Losing and Taking again of the Town of Mansoul. A New Edition to Which are Subjoined Notes by Mr Samuel Adams.
by Bunyan, John.
Small 4to. London: Printed By The Proprietors; and Sold By All Booksellers in Town and Country, 1795. Small 4to, viii, 338 pp., frontispiece and 7 other copper plate engravings. Half leather with marbled boards, quite worn, corners reinforced with card, pages somewhat browned. Bookplate recording presentation of the book by Rev. John Kinnear to Magee College Library, shelf number in ink on title page, library blindstamp on front free endpaper. A late edition of Bunyan’s enormously popular allegorical military epic, written following the Popish Plot and the Exclusion Bill Crisis of 1678-1681. “The epic's violence—rape, arson, banishment, and murder, even of children—is a damning indictment of the tory regime. Bunyan's message was a call to resistance, but not insurrection, a summons to the faithful to stand resolutely for their faith in the face of a state determined to crush nonconformity and impose a Catholic sovereign on the country.” (DNB) This copy was apparently a gift from the Rev. John Kennear (1824-1894), Irish politician and Presbyterian minister, to Magee College, now part of Ulster University in Derry, Northern Ireland. (Inventory #: 105522)
