Matched bindings of half leather with marbled boards and endpapers, panelled backstrips with green labels and decorative blind stamping, blind rolled borders on covers, ribbon markers. Evenly worn, Authentic Narrative skillfully rebacked, internally quite fresh. Later Scottish editions of Newton’s autobiography recounting his wild youth and religious conversion aboard slave trading boats, first published in 1764, and of his collected letters on religious subjects first published in 1780. In later life John Newton (1725-1807) became a respected clergyman representing “an affable, winsome evangelicalism within the Church of England” (DNB), remembered for penning the hymns ‘Glorious things of thee are spoken’, ‘How sweet the name of Jesus sounds!’, and ‘Amazing grace’.
