PATTERSON (Book Five)
first edition
1958
by WILLIAMS, William Carlos
New Directions, 1958. First Edition. 8vp, A fine copy in some soiled and chipped dj. Wallace A44; Morgan B3. Only 2980 copies printed. This is the last part of the epic of New Jersey. This includes the first printing of an Allen Ginsberg letter. This is probably the greatest work by the influential poet who called for the use of the native voice in American poetics. In a letter to Robert Lowell (March 11, 1952), Williams wrote: "I've become interested in a young poet, Allen Ginsberg, of Patterson -- who is coming to personify the place for me. Maybe there will be a 5th book of Patterson embodying everything I've learned of 'the line' to date. (Inventory #: 55937)
