New York: The Century Co, 1898. Hardcover. Very Good. Second edition. xxiv, 499pp. Three color fold-out maps in rear. Original brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine. Front hinge cracked, cloth mildly soiled, spine ends and corners starting to fray and bump, else very good being socialite and philanthropist Natalie H. Hammond's copy with her signature on the front fly. Mrs. Hammond's husband John Hays Hammond was an American mining engineer and was in complete charge of Cecil Rhodes' mines in South Africa during the time this book was published. After the disastrous Jameson Raid they returned to America and went on to become successful in the oil industry garnering such friends as President Taft. An interesting association copy since Bryce was a known Liberal and the Hammond's Republicans.
