Lengthy Typed Letter Signed on personal letterhead
by LANDON, Alf (1887 - 1987)
Topeka, KS, 1938. unbound. 2 pages, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, Topeka, Kansas, January 12, 1938. Written to powerful New York attorney and Republican Party powerbroker Frederic R. Coudert, defending President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in small part: "...Now I want to ask you a question, in strictest confidence...When you come to analyze Mr. Roosevelt's most consistent objective, isn't it simply, maybe, a jump ahead of Mr. Hoover's theory of government?...Aside from the purely temporary expedients which Mr. Hoover adopted in the depression days and which Mr. Roosevelt continued, it seems to me there is continuity of thought and of policy. Mr. Hoover favored greatly increasing the powers of the Chief executive, except on relief. After all, hasn't Mr. Roosevelt simply adopted the theory of Alexander Hamilton and carried it further than Hamilton ever dreamed of? In fact, he has not only adopted these theories with reference to a stronger central government, but he has also adopted the Hamiltonian theory of subsidies to different groups. He has simply extended these subsidies to take in more different groups!" *Alf Landon, though a republican, greatly admired President Roosevelt and was a staunch supporter of New Deal policies and of Labor Unions. Without doubt, one of the best Landon letters to come to market in quite a long time. Horizontal folds; very good(+) condition. American politician who was the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in 1936.
