by Wagner, Paul
Berlin: Paul Parey, 1907. First Spanish-language edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Folio (15 x 19 1/4"). 12 loose plates, as issued. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth portfolio, with gold lettering to front cover.
This complete set of 12 colored photographic reproductions documents Professor Dr. Paul Wagner's field experiments with nitrogen fertilizer at the Darmstadt Agricultural Experiment Station in the years 1901 to 1906. The goal of Dr. Wagner was to show that plants need nitrogen to grow healthy stems and leaves. Although nitrogen is the most abundant element in the air we breathe, that form of nitrogen cannot be used by plants. Nitrogen contained in fertilizer, on the other hand, is readily taken up by plants. The photographs featured in this portfolio compare plants and vegetables grown with and without nitrogen fertilizer. Each print measures 11 1/2 x 10 1/8", and is pasted onto a captioned heavy cardstock (size: 14 5/8 x 18 5/8").
Spine rubbed and slightly frayed along edges. Lower left corner of plate 11 chipped (not affecting lettering or the image). Captions in Spanish. Portfolio in overall good- to good, plates in good+ to very good condition. (Inventory #: 40333)
