A work inspired by the messianic assertions of Sabbatai Zevi (1626-76), news of which quickly spread from the Middle East to Europe. Half the text is dedicated to the Zevi story and was probably written by Paul Rycaut, English consul in Turkey, who feared publishing it under his own name. Evelyn functioned as an editor and translator and combined the Zevi tale with the accounts of other false prophets and pretenders to miracles.
Bookplate of Robert S. Pirie on the front free endpaper, with his note that this was purchased in 1962. (Inventory #: 26977)
