Written on the eve of his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court to powerful New York attorney Frederic R. Coudert, in part: "...I shall be busy the next two weeks picking up Honorary Degrees. They don't signify anything except that I have been appointed to an important office, but I take childish pleasure in collecting them, just as the simple-minded people feel in collecting stamps and beetles." One horizontal fold; staple holes in the upper right corner. Very good(+) condition. American jurist who served an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court (1932 - 1938).
