, July 13, 1965, Berkeley, California. Snyder, Gary. Poetry Reading, July 13, 1965, Berkeley, California on CD. Noted on label only as Poetry Reading July 13, 1965. This was the legendary conference where there were seminars on Gary Snyder, Charles Olson, Leroi Jones and others. Gary Snyder's readings were on July 13 with an introduction by Thomas Parkinson, who was Professor of English at the University of California (whose book on the Casebook on the Beats was seminal). It was at this conference that Charles Olson was designated President of Poets and Allen Ginsberg, Secretary of State of Poetry. The sedate Robert Creely remarked in disdain:"There will never be another poetry conference in Berkeley, Berkeley is too bizarre." According to OCLC both Berkeley and Kent State have incomplete copies on audio tape reels: analog, 3 3/4 ips, 2 track, 7 in. In their account the first part is missing; however, the introduction by Parkinson is there, tape 2 is blank but Gary Snyder begins reading on the third and continues with good fidelity until he reads 39 poems. 41 tracks (track 2 blank, possibly introduction of faculty. (58:32) Very scarce. (Inventory #: 018793)
