The Province of East New Jersey, 1609-1702: The Rebellious Proprietary (The Princeton History of New Jersey Series)
by Pomfret, John E.
x, 407 pp. 8vo. A study of the 'proprietary colony under the Carterets, then under the Twenty Four Proprietors, until it was reunited with West Jersey in 1702... The proprietors were harassed on the one hand by the governors of New York, who successfully challenged their rights to free ports, and on the other by the Crown authorities, who as early as 1685 inaugurated quo warrant proceedings against them. The discontented inhabitants of East Jersey, with no hope of gaining control over the province, welcome royal rule as the least of evils.'
