Boston, New-England: Printed and sold by Rogers and Fowle in Queen-street and by D. Gookin in Marlborough Street, 1747. First edition. 8vo. viii, 248 pp. Barnard (1681-1770) served as pastor of the Congregational Church in Marblehead for more than a half century, encourage the growth and development of his town, especially its commercial fishing industry, and published a good number of works related to his service in the pulpit (cf. DAB). Evans 5905. Rather widely held in research institutions (OCLC locates 28 copies), but only one copy has sold at auction in the past 38 years (ABPC, 1976-2014). Early owner's signature on front endpaper, text block lightly browned, else very good. Contemporary paneled sheep (rubbed, joints cracked an inch or so at top and bottom of spine), recent leather spine label. (#8265).
