London, 1845. Two volumes. xiii,[3],316; viii,272pp., plus six plates (four folding, some colored) and one folding map, and [16]pp. publisher's ads in second volume. Original green publisher's cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Spines lightly faded and worn, corners and edges of boards bumped. Light dampstaining to edges of plates, else quite clean internally. Good plus. Lyell, the eminent British geologist, went to America in 1841 to lecture in Boston and to pursue his scientific investigations. He returned to England in August of 1842, having travelled through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York (the folding colored frontispiece is of Niagara Falls), Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, the Midwest (especially Ohio), and Nova Scotia. The folding geological map of the U.S. in the second volume traces his route. "Lyell's powers of close, accurate observation, coupled with his judicious temper, render his works on America among the best of his generation" - Clark.
