1861. Four hand-colored lithographs, visible areas approximately 19 x 27 inches, expertly matted and handsomely framed to 31 1/2 x 38 1/2 inches. A few pale marginal stains, minor abrasion to imprint of one example. Very good. Four rare hand-colored lithographs from the "Life of a Fireman" series by the famed printmakers Currier & Ives. All four prints show energetic firefighting scenes, one taking place at night ("The New Era"). The artist for three of the four was Louis Maurer, a long-time artist for Currier & Ives. "Perhaps his most important work for the firm was the famous series "The Life of a Fireman," a set of six exceptionally well executed large folios that had great popularity and that today are among the most eagerly sought-after prints in the Currier & Ives collection" - Peters.
