by [Seabury, Samuel]: [Leaming, Jeremiah]
New Have: Thomas and Samuel Gree, 1785. 8,18,15,5pp. Stitched, as issued. Old stab holes in stitch margin. Moderate soiling to titlepage, moderate foxing throughout, edges worn. About good. Seabury was the first American Episcopal Bishop and the leading Tory spokesman in the American colonies as the Revolution progressed. Seabury is notable for his pamphlet war with the young Alexander Hamilton, which marked the launching of the latter's brilliant career and one of the most interesting political exchanges of the Revolutionary era. Seabury was elected as bishop of Connecticut in 1783, but had to sail to England for consecration, there being no other American bishops to do the task. The Anglican ministry refused, and Seabury was instead consecrated in Scotland. EVANS 19207. TRUMBULL 27 (Inventory #: WRCAM46496)
