THE NORTHWEST COAST; OR, THREE YEARS' RESIDENCE IN WASHINGTON TERRITOR
1857 · New York
by Swan, James G.
New York: Harper & Brother, 1857. 435pp., including folding map and many illustrations. Frontis. Publisher's red blindstamped cloth, spine gilt. Light wear to extremities, minor soiling to boards, corners bumped, light tanning and occasional foxing throughout. Near fine. The author resided in Washington Territory (actually both Oregon and Washington) during 1853-55. According to Decker, he was a "secret agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad." Much of this book, however, is devoted to Swan's investigations of Indian life in the Northwest, including a good deal of material on Indian linguistics. It is lauded by Tweney as one of the classics of the Pacific Northwest. HOWES S1164, "aa." GRAFF 4046. SMITH 10044. TWENEY 89, 74. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 3781. FIELD 1526. SOLIDAY IV:813.
