An interesting account of the five-year whaling voyage of two young men from Palmyra, New York, with detailed descriptions of their day-to-day activities and encounters. "This narrative may have been written by John D. Jones, but conclusive evidence is lacking. The ship visited many islands, among them, Guam, the Hawaiian Islands, Tonga, Juan Fernandez, and Formosa" - Hill. Thoroughly illustrated, including several engravings and anatomical diagrams of whales. Also contains a particularly lively account of the port town of Lahaina in the mid-1800s (including an illustration of the view from the water), and many vivid descriptions of whales and whaling operations.
