1837 · Pari
by Federmann, Nicolas: [Ternaux-Compans, Henri]
Pari: Arthus Bertran, 1837. [4],227pp. Original pink wrappers. Chipping to edges of wrappers, textblock cracked, spine mostly perished, soiling and wear to covers. A few spots of light soiling. Good plus. Unopened. The narrative of Nicolas Federmann, a German conquistador and early explorer of Venezuela and Colombia between 1529 and 1531. Part of Federmann's claim to fame is that he took part in a second expedition to search for the legendary golden city of El Dorado. This work, which is complete on its own, is first published here. It is one of the impressive collections of early histories of Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Florida, and South America assembled by Henri Ternaux-Compans, the first major collector of Americana. The scion of a French family who had made a fortune in the wool trade, Ternaux-Compans collected vigorously in the two decades after the end of the Napoleonic Wars
