A fine biography of the great Victorian illustrator, George Cruikshank (1792-1878), by his colleague and friend, the prolific journalist and playwright, Blanchard Jerrold (1826-1884). Tipped into volume one is a note by Cruikshank, dated October 10, 1878, to a Mr. Kirby, written in a secretarial hand, but signed by him. Cruikshank responds to an inquiry about an illustration "entitled 'How d'ye like my new shoes.' I have to inform you that altho' it is an imitation of my style; that it is not done by me. But as a guide to you for the future, I will state, that all works done by me have in the corner the initials G.C. or G.Ckr, or the name in full of yours very truly Geo Cruikshank."
