New York: Harper & Brothers. Very Good in Very Good+ dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [light shelfwear, very slight dampstaining at bottom of front cover, light soiling/spotting to edges of text block, one-time owner's signature on ffep; jacket moderately edgeworn, a few small nicks along bottom edge, remnants of two small adhesive labels on each flap (partly on jacket, party on pastedowns) which formerly held jacket in place]. "A Novel of an American Girl in Politics" -- the "girl" in question, of course, is already pushing thirty when the story opens -- in which an ambitious and politically savvy young lobbyist (she's working to promote a law designed to protect factory women from exploitation) backs out of her engagement to an eligible chap after her stated intention to go to work for a gubernatorial candidate brings out his innate sexist piggishness. As the story progresses, she battles male attitudes and prejudices left and right, and also makes an enemy of a woman named Mrs. Appleby, described in a contemporary review as "a formidable old political warhorse who was secretly jealous of the girl's attractiveness and social position." The author, who wrote more than three dozen books (both fiction and nonfiction), was a 1912 graduate of Vassar (where her papers are held); she was described in a 1982 obituary as "an early and longtime advocate of women's rights." An uncommon book, and with the country possibly on the verge of electing its first female President, kind of a timely reminder of how much progress has been made in the last 80+ years. .
