by [Photoplay edition]: Thorne, Guy [pseud of Cyril A.E.R. Gull]
London: The Readers Library Publishing Co. Ltd., 1928. 12mo. Gilt decorated plum cloth. Eight plates. Some foxing et edges, usual slight tanning to text stock, humidity offset from binding to verso of jacket, otherwise a sound copy of this poorly made book, in a bright, striking example of the pictorial dust jacket (a few small nicks and a short, internally mended tear at the toe of the spine). First edition in this format of Thorne's 1911 novel, published in the Readers Library Illustrated film series, capitalizing on the A. W. and F. Production based, in part, on the novel's dramatization by Edward G. Hemmerde and Francis Nielson. The title page associates Lili Damita with the cast, but the 1915 film version directed by Maurice Tourneur predates her film career. IMDB records no further adaptations of the novel, nor is she credited with a film under this title -- it may refer to a lost film. The garish dust jacket art is by Laurence East, and the publication date above is that ascribed by OCLC. (Inventory #: WRCLIT75723)
