Inventor Oliver Evans, born in Newport, Delaware, developed machinery to mechanize the milling industry in the United States. Ellicott was one of the most noted mill owners in Maryland. This work was first published in 1795. went through numerous editions, and was still in print in 1860. With the Delaware bookplate of Gertrude Brincklé on front free endpaper. Covers separated, rubbed and scufed, especially along edges. Front free endpaper torn, with ink notations. Top edge of spine lacking. Back endpapers torn at edges, with ink notations. Staining and foxing throughout text. Some plates following page 364 chipped at edges.
