Softcover
1920 · New York City
New York City: The American Art Association, 1920. Softcover. F+ (Front cover is missing; pages are aging lightly; entries have prices realized written next to them; illus. are clear.). Tan paper wraps, unpaginated, 23 BW plates. Issued in conjunction with a 1920 auction of 175 lots from the library of Colonel Jacob Ruppert, whom we assume to be the American businessman and National Guard colonel who was also the owner of the New York Yankees from 1915 until his death in 1939. This was indeed a magnificent collection of exquisitely-bound volumes -- most of which may never have been opened and read. The lots are listed in alpha order by author name or title, for easy reference to specific books. A previous owner wrote what must have been the prices realized next to each entry. It would cost a great deal more to replicate this collection today, nearly a century later. Includes illustrations of 23 examples from the lots. Think: leather bindings, gilt letters, and gilt top edges galore.
