Metuchen, New Jersey:: Raritan Arsenal. 1951-1962. A group of 60 gelatin silver photographs, along with eight duplicates, and four printed photos. All measuring approximately 8" x 10". Light wear at the edges, scattered tack and staple holes, and abrasion to the rear of some images, overall very good. An archive of the sign painting craft by artist Frank Poppy, the staff sign painter of the Raritan Arsenal in Metuchen, New Jersey. The majority of the images are from the 1950's and with one showing Poppy at work. The billboards, which were on display near the entry gates and outside various Arsenal buildings, focused on promoting safety ("Used the hand rail," "When lifting, crouch, don't slouch," "Take time to be safe!"), as well as to celebrating various holidays and collecting for fund drives. All the images are clear and the sign skillfully executed throughout. Just over a dozen of the images have appear to have been prepared for press releases with a military release stamp on their rear along with a date, photo credit, and sign location. Four additional printed reproduction of the billboard images are include and appear have been used as part of a "Safety Digest" program. An uncommon and compelling visually document of the disappearing art of sign painting. . (Inventory #: 407330)
