1935. unbound. 1 page measuring 11 x 8.5 inches -- an annotated reading copy of a short speech before the members of the Book and Magazine Guild, New York City, no date, circa 1935, in part: "I am glad to have the chance to say a few words about the Book and Magazine Guild and the 'rare book auction' which is to be held under the auspices of the union at the Hotel Algonquin at 8:30 P. M. on April 8...We white collar (no nasty cracks) boys and girls should stick together. Frankly I am a little skeptical as to the rarity of all items which such talented auctioneers as F. P. A. and Clifton Fadiman purpose to present to you for sale...However, since there will be manuscripts of Mann, Carl Sandburg, Edna St Vincent Millay and many others I think that the bidders can get something precious. And even if that were not true how anybody could find a better opportunity than this chance to contribute to the Book and Magazine Guild as a union which will do so many valiant and useful things to raise the standards in the key industry of American culture." Boldly signed at the top: "By Heywood Broun." Horizontal folds with some fraying at the edges; very good(-) condition. American journalist and writer who became the co-founder of the American Newspaper Guild. (Inventory #: 267094)
