[RECEIPT FROM THE PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETTS BAY INDICATING PAYMENT TO SHERIFF SAMUEL GALLUP OF BRISTOL]
Bristol, Ma, 1698. p., measuring 7 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Minor wear and soiling, backed on later paper. Trimmed a bit close. Good plus. A document recording payments made by the Massachusetts colonial government to Samuel Gallup as Sheriff of Bristol County. Gallup served as sheriff of Bristol County for several years. Services performed include a journey to Dartmouth and Freetown to issue a summons, publishing a proclamation about to prorogation of the General Court, prisoner transport, and summoning justices. Each line item individually expensed. Though brief, the document provides some insight into the judicial activities of the county sheriff in the late 17th-century. (Inventory #: WRCAM51529)
