Bollandistres, Saints et Legendes; Quatre Siecles De Recherche
by Godding, Robert
Bruxelles: Societe Des Bollandistes, 2007. 179p. French text. Illustrations (some in color). As the Protestant Reformation often mocked the saints and their representation in statues, the 17th century Jesuit scholar Heribert Rosweyde began to study the sources in ancient monastic libraries rather than the false legends about them, when he died Jesuit Jan Bolland took up the project which he completedd in 1607. This volume is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Rosweyde's undertaking. While the Protestant Reformation accused the Church of idolary, this work shows the balance and research that went into the process of canonization. In addition, there are many photographs of the original documents as well as the great libraries that still exist.
