by Battle, Kemp P.
Raleigh, NC: Printed for the author by Edwards & Broughton Printing Co, 1912. First edition. Thick 8vo. 2 volumes: ix, (1), 880; viii, (2), 875 pp. Illustrated from photographs, plates, portraits, frontispiece portrait of William Richardson Davie in volume one; a "Supplement to Vol. II of Battle's History of the University of North Carolina" is laid into volume two (six unnumbered leaves, printed rectos only, stapled; Raleigh?, ca. 1912?). A detailed history, including a complete rundown of Confederate service for all graduates, written by a president of the university, 1877-1891, and longtime history professor, 1891-1907. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper of volume one: "Mrs. Lucy Battle (Martin) Currie / from Lucy Battle's Son / Kemp Plummer Battle / Feb'y 3, 1911."; Lucy Battle Currie (1876-1967) was one of the first women students at Davidson College, the wife of Archibald Currie, a long time professor there, and a life-long resident of the town, active in historical organizations, education, and other state and local activities; she was named for Battle's mother from her father's friendship with the Battle family while he served as a professor at U.N.C. Providing corrections and additions to the "hastily" produced volume, the supplement does not turn up in any of the usual sources: OCLC, Thornton, the U.N.C. online catalogue, etc. Thornton 709. A little rubbed, but a very good copy with a nice association. Gilt-stamped burgundy cloth, volume one with floral endpapers, volume two with plain. (#8355).
