This is the first edition and first issue, i.e., "Stave I"; with text entirely uncorrected; half title printed in blue; title page printed in red and blue. In the original brown gilt stamped vertically ribbed cloth. Front cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, green chalky colored endpapers. The binding conforms to Todd's first impression, first issue, when he calls for.... the smallest interval between blindstamped border and gilt wreath equal to 14 mm., and with the upper serif of the "D" in "Dickens" unbroken. Cloth lightly chipped at top and bottom of spine. Early owner signature, W. B. Mack N 1843" at front pastedown, with possibly his small drip of ink at front cover above the wreath.Small 8vo, , 166pp, advertisements . Four hand colored steel engraved plates by and after Leech and four wood engraved text illustrations by W.J. Linton after Leech. Chemised and housed in a handsome quarter green morocco solander box with gilt spine lettering on red title piece and reddish marbled paper boards.
