Purchased from a relative of Hourwich. Hourwich was a major scholar, activist and Debsian socialist (1860-1924) born in Vilna, Lithuania and engaged in revolutionary activities in Russia and White Russia as a young man, came to America where he lectured in the 1890s at the University of Chicago and also became active with various socialist, Marxist and labor parties and activities, including joining the Socialist Party after WWI; he also was a dedicated advocate for Jewish workers and for the Zionist movement and was the author of a number of scholarly and autobiographical books.
