[N.p., likely Mount Vernon], 1761. p., 3 x 7 inches. Heavily worn, dampstained, areas of loss. Laid down on a later sheet. Fair. Brief receipt recording a transaction between George Washington and Walter Magowan, the tutor in residence at Mount Vernon. Magowan came to Washington's estate in 1761 and stayed until 1767, during which time he tutored both John Parke and Martha Parke Custis, Martha Washington's children by her first husband. The receipt reads: "Received of George Washington, a bill of exchange drawn on Rob. Harry Esq. and Comp. in my favour for sixteen pounds sterl., it being in part of my [illegible loss] as tutor to Master and Miss Custis. [signed] Walter Magowan." (Inventory #: WRCAM51558)
