Queen Elizabeth is a biographical account of the life and achievements of Elizabeth I of England written "in relation to the great events of her time." As Creighton explains in his in preface, "Elizabeth's life was so closely interwoven with the history of England that it is impossible to separate her actions from public affairs." A beautiful volume, Queen Elizabeth is printed on deluxe Japan paper and contains numerous engraved illustrations, each of which is printed in duplicate using different hues of ink. The Royal Arms of Elizabeth I incorporate the three lions of Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) quartered with the three fleur-de-lys of the French kings, symbolizing England's claim to the French throne. On this binding, the Royal Arms are surrounded by the emblem of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by Richard III. It is the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom, and membership is reserved for the sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than 24 members. The emblem is in reverence to Saint George, the Patron Saint of England, and the motto is Honi soit qui mal y pense: "Shame to him who thinks badly of it.". Limited.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
