London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. 8vo. Green cloth, gilt spine title, top edge gilt. 198,(2)pp. Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross. First published in a very small edition in 1894, this reissue with Sir Denison's preface is sometimes described as a 'first edition thus'.This is a sharp copy with only the barest trace of wear. The dustwrapper has light soil, a bit of wear and darkening from age but is essentially near fine. And so it begins. Gertrude Bell, who, assisted by T. E. Lawrence and others, was the great shaper of modern Arabia. But it began in 1892, when Bell visited Persia for the first time, and fell in love, both with Arabia and with Henry Cadogan. Together they visited and explored and interviewed, and Bell wrote it all down. They engaged to marry, but their engagement was deemed unsuitable, and Gertrude returned to England. Henry died of pneumonia a short time later, and Gertrude's stepmother, Lady Florence, persuaded her to publish her Persian experience. After Gertrude;s death in 1926, Lady Florence caused this present issue, and prevailed upon Sir Denison, Gertrude's Persian professor and the Head of the London Oriental Institute, to write an explanatory preface. The first edition of 'Safar Nameh: Persian Pictures' was published in 1894. Collectible copies are virtually nonexistent. This reissue, though many times reprinted, is also elusive in collectible condition. It would be hard to find a nicer copy than this exemplar.
