NP: NP, 1942. Original document. Loose_leaf. vg. On the night of 8/9 November 1942, leaflets concerning the invasion of French North Africa (Operation Torch) were dropped over both Nazi-occupied France and Vichy-France. Ours is one of them.
This leaflet is printed in French and measures 5 1/8 x 8 1/8". At its recto features the American and British seals, followed by a red-printed "In the name of the Governments of the United States of America and Great Britain." At the lower part is printed a bold "Avis" (Warning) to the French People, and a statement that the text to be read at verso was originally aired on the BBC early on November 8.
At verso, the text explains to the French people that the invasion is the first step towards liberating France, the immediate aim being to defeat Axis forces in north Africa. The French readers are reminded that the Allies come in friendship to protect North Africa from the Italian and German forces, and that French sovereignty is not affected. Metropolitan France is also reminded not to rise up in support. This leaflet bears the number "F.141"
Text in French. Some minor creasing, otherwise leaflet in very good condition. (Inventory #: 40628)
