William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was clearly, one of the greatest American historians. The subject that fascinated him for more than 30 years was the rise and decline of the Spanish Empire. Born into a prosperous family, he graduated from Harvard in 1814, but poor health and failing eyesight discouraged him from a career in business, or law. His good friend, Washington Irving, directed him to his life's work: writing the history of 16th century Spain and its colonies. He is best known for "History of the Conquest of Mexico" (1843) and History of the Conquest of Peru" (1847). [Bal., volume 7, p. 180] See our listing under Prescott's works. (Inventory #: 3278)
