Text skillfully printed with 68 lines in two columns, with commentary surround in red and black; running titles in red, wood block initials in black, red caps throughout. pp. life of Gregory IX, pp. [blank]; pp. alphabetical table; pp. glossary; pp. Margarita Decretalium, colophon with large printers device in black (Octaviano Scotto); [blank] 600 numbered leaves of Pope Gregory's Decretales printed on both sides in red and black; colophon on page 600 in red with large red printer's device on verso (Octaviano Scotto). Bound in contemporary vellum, worn, page corners bent on first dozen or so leaves; a few early manuscript marginal notes. Page 599 with corner torn away, affecting several words. Internally clean and bright. Ottaviano Scotto was the founder of one of the earliest large scale publishing houses in Italy and one of the first Italians to issue liturgical books. With his death in 1498, the business then passed on to his heirs. The business became so successful that Scotto's regular printer joined as a partner and soon employed some of the most renowned printers in Venice. The present volume is a superb example of this publisher's work, incorporating red and black ink, with precision. (Inventory #: 6627)
