A Message to Garcia is an inspirational essay that was first published in the March 1899 issue of Hubbard's magazine The Philistine. In the text, Hubbard describes the U.S. Army Lieutenant Andrew S. Rowan's secret mission to find Cuban General Calixto García so as to arrange for military cooperation between the United States and Cuba during the Cuban War of Independence. Hubbard praises Rowan by celebrating his determination and dedication to complete what undoubtedly seemed like an impossible mission, declaring that "his kind is so rare" that "civilization is one long anxious search for just such individuals." Originally composed to fill blank space in The Philistine, A Message to Garcia was extremely popular and Hubbard reprinted the essay several times to meet public demand. . This edition was published by the Roycroft Press, a reformist group of artists and artisans in who lived in an artists' colony in East Aurora, New York. Founded by Elbert Hubbard in 1895, the "Roycrofters" formed a major part of the American Arts and Crafts movement, which encouraged the blending of the artisanal and utilitarian, placing emphasis on the beauty as well as the value of objects. In bookbinding, this translated into the use of commissioned artists to design book covers, endpapers, and page borders. Indeed, Hubbard's Roycroft Press was inspired by William Morris' Kelmscott Press, which produced beautiful with elaborate decorations inspired by medieval manuscripts. Similarly, Roycroft editions are decorated by a collaboration of the artists and artisans of the Roycroft Campus.. Signed. Limited.. Soft Cover. Near Fine.
