New York: Simon & Schuster, 1956. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, stated. Very good in decorative boards; no jacket, as issued. Light edgewear, chipping to the spine at head and foot; corners bumped. This copy inscribed by Crockett Johnson: "To Ursula, who was kind to this animal from away back," and signed by him. It's our belief that the Ursula is Ursula Nordstrom, the legendary children's book editor; Nordstrom edited Johnson's "Harold and he Purple Crayon." However, there is a previous and unrelated owner's name on the front free endpaper, which is enough of a cautionary to prevent declaring this as an important association copy. So: a nice copy with an uncommon signature and a tantalizing possibility. (Inventory #: 01163)
