168+ PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CUBAN SHIPPING ALBUM OF "MARITIMA PARRENO"
by Parreno, Desiderio
1921. Very Good. (CUBA). 168 + ORIGINAL IMAGES FROM HISTORIA GRAFICA DE LA MARITIMA PARRENO. (FROM PHOTO ALBUM OF THE PARRENO DOCK COMPANY). Santiago de Cuba, 1921-41. 168 b/w photographs, four b/w photo postcards and one small negative taken along the waterfront of Santiago de Cuba between 1920 and 1930, and two from 1941. This collection is from the record kept by Cuban businessman Desiderio Parreno, "Custom House Broker, Forwarding Agent, Steamship Agent, Insurance, Real Estate," of the renovation and expansion of his company's docks and warehouses. Documents the need for renovation (photos of cargo - mostly rum and sugar - piled up beside warehouses too small to accommodate it, small docking areas, etc.), the American engineers, the construction, and the further development of the completed facilities. Docks and sheds are named "Desiderio," "Luz," "Isabel," etc. One is named "Don Pancho" to commemorate a long-time employee. Earthquake damage and repair in 1932, dredging of the harbor, the embarcation of a locomotive named "Desiderio," acquisition of a crane, installation of telephones and other improvements are shown. Includes four copies of a staff photo with lists of names. An interesting document of Cuban commercialism before the Revolution, in mostly very good condition. Many images are captioned on the reverse with typing (visible in image) or pencil, and some are marked in pencil on the image itself. Sizes vary; four are 4 x 12 inches; the majority are about 3 x 5 inches, some smaller, with 39 being 5 x 7 inches, 11 being 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, and the large torn group photo is 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
