DE L'EGLISE GALLICANE DANS SON RAPPORT AVEC LA SOUVERAIN PONTIFE Faisant Suite a L'Ouvrage Intitule Du Pape
1821·Lyon & Paris
by Maistre, Joseph Marie, Comte De, 1753-1821
Lyon & Paris: Chez Rusand. Very Good-. 1821. First Edition. Hardcover. viii, 350 pages; Contemporary full sheep with flat spine and two red labels lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Spine quite rubbed, with splitting along the joints, minor defects to the labels and a small piece of leather missing. Internally very good. This was published in the year of the author's death. Two years earlier, Maistre had published "Du Pape" in two volumes -- the present work had been intended as the last part of that work but was split off into a separate work. J-M de Maistre wrote splendid and forceful French in his passionate criticism of the pomp and power of the French church and defence of Rome and Papal infallibility. The author was a profoundly conservative philosopher, committed to Monarchy and the authority of the Pope. He believed that the branches of Catholicism which did not accept total authority of the Roman Church were doomed to a slow descent into Protestantism and even indifference to the agnostic ways of the modern scientific world and that only one true Church could withstand these forces of modern life. This is the first edition of what would become many -- a classic. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. . (Inventory #: 39049)
