Spain is Auden's poetical reflection on the Spanish Civil War, based on his experiences living in Spain since the outbreak of conflict in 1936. In the poem, Auden chronicles the events that led up to the conflict and the arrival of the International Brigades before prophesying about the war's possible outcomes. "Spain," which denounces the rise of Franco's fascism, is one of Auden's most famous poems. This first Faber edition, published in May 1937, was slightly preceded by the exceedingly scarce French pamphlet Deux Poèmes, which was published in April 1937 as part of Nancy Cunon's Poètes de monde défendent le peuple espagnol series and included Raúl González Tuñón's "Madrid" in addition to Auden's "Spain." However, BAL notes that "no information has been found about the printing of this pamphlet," and "there is some doubt as to whether or not this printing precedes the Faber edition." As there are less than ten known copies, all of which are held in university libraries, this Faber edition is the earliest accessible edition and is widely considered the first edition. "Spain" was later published in a revised form in the 1940 collection Another Time under the title "Spain 1937," and remains one of Auden's most anthologized poems.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover.
