Reading PA: Fantasy Press. Good in Good dj. 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. [moderately worn book, some fading to spine cloth, light soiling to edges of text block; jacket is edgeworn, with a few small tears, minor paper loss at top of spine, some diagonal creasing here and there, and a 3/4" deep chip at bottom of front panel]. (pen-and-ink drawings, chapter-head decorations) Van Vogt's "first major venture into the field of sheer fantasy" (sez the jacket blurb, which also notes that since 1939 he had "sold approximately a million words of science fiction and fantasy"). The title character is "Ptath, God-King of Gonwonlane, who is also Captain Peter Holroyd, of the United States Army [who] died in a direct bomb-hit -- yet he lives as mighty Ptath, the Shining One, a dual personality, groping in a maze of confusion and uncertainty," etc. (Well, wouldn't you, if you were alive and dead at the same time, not to mention being saddled with a name you couldn't pronounce without spitting?) . (Inventory #: 22224)
