[Bridgeport, CT]: International Workers Order, 1938. pp. Folded leaflet, from 8.5. x 11" sheet. Half- tone portrait. Pencil erasure on upper panel, else near fine. An original programme for this appearance under the auspices of the IWO. Hughes embarked on this lecture series after returning to America from a peace conference in Paris where, with Theodore Dreiser, he represented the League of American Writers. He was very much in need of funds, so he turned to the IWO and Louise Thompson who set up a series of appearances to promote IWO membership and to raise some cash. Hughes' lecture was presented in company with The Stamford Theatre Progressives' choral play "Scottsboro." Heywood Broun, John Brophy and Genevieve Taggard are among the listed co- sponsors.
