Hardcover
1865
by [Rands, William Brighty]
Alexander Strahan and Co., 1865. Hardcover. Very Good. Two volume set. 8vo. Contemporary half vellum over marbled paper-covered boards, red and black leather spine labels. vi, 320; vi, 368 pp. A collection of essays purportedly written by Henry Holbeach, a pseudonym for William Brighty Rands. The first volume collects 'Studies in Life, Literature, and Philosophy,' and include pieces on history and religion. The second volume, 'Controversial Letters,' includes open letters to such figures as John Stuart Mill, Thomas Carlyle, Matthew Arnold, and more. Some light wear to edges and corners. The spine labels have some scuffs, and the spines are lightly soiled. The paper on the covers is scuffed and beginning to pull away from the backstrips. The bindings are tight, and the interiors seem generally clean apart from some light foxing to the endpapers. Armorial bookplate of M. Bruen to the front pastedown of volume I (with the motto Fides Scutum). Overall very good with faults as noted. (Inventory #: 427332)
