by Baskin, Leonard
[Northampton, MA]: Gehenna Press, 1993. 1st. Leather bound. First Edition, Deluxe Limited Edition, Number 5 of eight copies (from a total of 26), with a second suite of the plates printed variously & on different papers; a water-color drawing & a canceled copperplate. SIGNED by Leonard Baskin with an additional gift inscription "For Zoe / with Leonard's / warm regards. 1994." 4to. The large initial letter 'J' on the title page is the work of John E. Benson of Newport, Rhode Island. The copperplates are by Baskin; his son, Hosea, composed the geometric texts set in van Krimpen's Spectrum types and printed the letterpress on Gehenna's middle-sized Albion hand-press; Leonard's student, Michael Kuch, printed the complex color etchings. The portraits have been pulled on the same sheets as the letterpress employing various techniques (and many passes through the press), to achieve the striking results. Each plate in the book and in the extra suite has been signed and numbered by Baskin in pencil. The book was hand-bound by Claudia Cohen of Easthampton, Mass. Full green morocco with various color morocco onlays and gilt tooling and titling in quarter black morocco clamshell box with gilt-lettered green morocco label on spine. A fine copy. "The enigmatic, humorous Jewish Artists of the Early & Late Renaissance, is written from the point of view of an imagined art historian, who acts as our guide through esoteric biographical details. This humorous work is in fact a fanciful pantheon of Jewish artists who might have flourished during the Renaissance, but didn't." These 16 imagined Jewish artists along with invented biographies, artistic heritages & achievements are presented by Baskin through ingenious typography and etched copperplates that display the portraits in rich & imaginative color & in odd juxtapositions, including the use of interesting counterproofs, that allow for compositions built of the same portrait. "People like me, who care about printing, constitute the tiniest lunatic fringe in the nation." - Leonard Baskin. (Works in Progress. The Gehenna Press the Work of Fifty Years. p. 111).
