Mérida, Yucatan: Hu'un, n.d.. Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated by the author.. An accordion book in the style of the Maya Codex: Closed, it measures 5 by 9 inches, but, when opened, it becomes 9 by about 50 inches. Printed on paper handmade in the Maya style by Hu'un.The covering boards are of thin wood, with the upper board printed with the title in black and a deer and a turtle outlined in black but hand colored in light blue and red ochre. The text is entirely in Yucatec, the old Maya language. The codex was hand-printed and painted on handmade paper by "local Maya Artisans of Yucatan." The paper is actually made by Mark Callaghan, the award winning expert papermaker in Mérida. It is made from sanseveria in the old Maya style which, though in many ways is like the paper made in the European/Asian tradition, is finished by pounding, leaving one side a little rough and the other quite smooth.Alejandra Kim Bolle, a Mayan from Ticul, Yucatan, was raised in a home where her grandmother spoke only Mayan, and her mother spoke Spanish. Later she married a Californian, and moved to New Hampshire, where, to her dismay, all of the household work she was used to doing in Yucatan was performed by machines. In desperation she obtained a degree in fine arts, and created this charming story of the deer and the turtle, so reminiscent of the tortoise and the hare of Æsop. Every little bit of text has a hand-painted illustration showing how the turtle (and his friends) outsmarted the deer in a race. Bolles died in 2011Laid in is an explanation of the story in Spanish, as well as a translation of the text into English. In fine condition..
