Le Roi Candaule, a three act drama in rhythmic prose, first appeared in these three issues ofthe periodical L’Ermitage Revue mensuelle illustrée de literature et d’art (1899). The play wasnot published in book form until 1901 by Revue Blanche, the same year it was produced.

The play about Le roi Candaule – (King Candaule) is taken from stories in Herodotus and Plato,the Lydian King Candaule believes his wife to be the most beautiful woman and wishes to showher off to the humble fisherman Gyges. Gyges murders Candaule then becomes king himself.
L’Ermitage revue littéraire française was founded in April 1890 and published until January1907. (Inventory #: 1316)
