1643 · Amsterodami
by Buchanan, George
Amsterodami: Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1643. First Elzevier edition, 8vo, pp. [8], 750, [38], 67, [1]; title page printed in red and black, printer's woodcut device on title, woodcut initials, sectional title page for De Jure Regni apud Scotos Dialogus; contemporary full British speckled calf, triple blind-rule borders on covers, spine in 5 compartments, red morocco label in 1; joints a little rubbed and a few hairline cracks in the spine, otherwise very good. Buchanan's (1506-1582) last but arguably most important work published shortly before his death in 1582. It is remarkable for the power and richness of its style, and of great value for the period personally known to the author, which occupies the greater portion of the book. Copinger 627; Willems 993.
