M. Tullii Ciceronis. De natura deorum libri tres, Accedunt Boherii, Davisii, & aliorum insigniores lectiones variantes et conjecturae
by Ciceronis, Marcus Tullius
Glasguae: typis academicis. Cura & sumptibus Roberti Foulis; prostant Londini apud Andream Millar.., 1741. 8vo, pp. , 155, ; uncut; old marbled boards worn; a good, sound copy. Bookplate of "Minto" with author and shelf mark in manuscript. A Foulis incunable. "Issued on three sizes of paper. [The Foulis Press catalogue of 1777] specifies Demy, Crown, and Pot; but in fact the largest size, of which I have seen an uncut copy, is certainly Printing Medium, while the other two are, to judge from cut dimensions, Printing Demy and Small Crown. All of these papers are of medium to poor quality, the largest being the worst, and the middle size the best ... Presumably printed by Alexander Miller, Foulis's predecessor at the University Press" (Gaskell). This copy measures 22 cm and is uncut; the gutter margin in this copy is approximately 1.2 cm. The fore-margin varies from approximately 3.5 to 5 cm, and the bottom margin from 4 to 5.5 cm. This is likely the crown octavo issue. ESTC notes: "Gaskell specifies three paper sizes, two with own price, but issues for ESTC purposes must be distinguished by gutter margin differences of 1 cm or more, and no copies distinguished thus as large paper have yet been found. BL's two copies each within have varying gutter margins, especially 8471.de.29 (between 0.9 and 1.4 cms!). All paper sizes of this edition are therefore classed as one issue unless gutter margin measurements show significant differences." Gaskell 3.
