The collection of XVII-century Italiain paintings in the Hermitage is one of the most significant in the world, comparable only to the collections in the Louvre, the Prado, and the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna. This catalogue is the result of more than 15 years' work of Svetlana Vsevolozskaja and a collaboration of Russian and Italian studies, covering 285 works, many reproduced here for the first time. This catalogue provides an almost complete picture of the events of 17th-century painting regarding quality, Italian regional schools, as well as works of the great masters and those of their students. Each work is fully annotated, with citations, inventory information, and sources; everything based upon historical evidence and stylistic comparisons. The catalogue is a journey through the main European collections, from the Crozat of Horace Walpole to the famed Russian private collections of the 18th and 19th centuries.
